Skateboarding Safety Gear
My Trip to the Skate Shop
Skateboarding safety gear was a priority for me in my quest
to learn to skateboard. I wanted to be sure I got the right
gear so I went to a local skate shop to get kitted out.
The first thing we looked at was the helmet. Although the
guy in the shop said the likelihood of hitting your head hard
is not that great, it is important to have a helmet because it
only takes one good knock do potentially do some serious
damage.
Getting the right helmet was a bit of a mission for me as I
have a small head but big hair. I needed one that would fit
snugly over my dreadlocks but not slip around when I moved my
head.
After trying on a few we decided on a large. The medium did
sort of fit but my hair seemed to somehow hold it off my head a
bit. We went for the wrist guards next. These are
important for me because I've injured my right wrist a
couple of times before and I'm a bit nervous of falling
on my hands. The first pair I tried on were perfect. They
fit snugly and offer good support without restricting my
movement too much.
I already have a set of knee and elbow pads so my next
acquisition was the board. For my height and weight I bought a
30.5" board with a width of 7.75".
It has 97a wheels as the area I'm skating on isn't the
smoothest surface in the world and I also don't want anything
too fast as I'm a bit nervous of hitting concrete at anything
faster than walking pace.
Well, I'm all kitted out and ready to go. All I have to do
now is get on the board and try it out. I'll be updating the
diary after my first skating session so, if you want a good
laugh, be sure to watch for the next entry.
Until then, happy skating.
